There are three commonly encountered states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. When a solid is heated, it transforms into a liquid and then from a liquid into a gas. If enough energy is applied to gas, it becomes an ionized gas known as plasma, which represents the fourth fundamental state of matter.

The plasma contains reactive chemical species such as electrons, ions, neutral molecules, and atoms, as well as charged species. Plasmas reduce concentrations of pathogens upon contact with contaminated air. Plasma destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi and prions; it also removes toxins and further organic contaminants.
